Brachioplasty

Brachioplasty

Also referred to as an arm lift, brachioplasty is a cosmetic surgery performed to remove excess skin and fatty tissue that can develop under the upper arms. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joshua Jacobson is a highly trained and experienced provider of brachioplasty in Beverly Hills who has helped many men and women achieve slimmer, firmer upper arm contours with this procedure.

What Is Brachioplasty?

Brachioplasty is a surgical cosmetic procedure that allows Dr. Jacobson to excise loose skin and lift and remodel tissue in the upper arms. The goal of this surgery is to create tighter, more defined upper arm contours.

The primary focus of brachioplasty is to eliminate extra skin. It is possible to remove minor amounts of fat, as well. However, if there is considerable excess fat in the upper arms, liposuction may be recommended instead of (or in addition to) an arm lift.

Your Brachioplasty Consultation

Dr. Jacobson will examine your upper arms during the arm lift consultation and ask about your medical history to determine if you are a candidate for brachioplasty. If brachioplasty is appropriate for your needs and goals, he will take measurements and photos of the treatment areas to plan for surgery.

You’ll also discuss pre-op requirements at this time. Patients must stop smoking for approximately one month before and after surgery and will need to avoid anti-inflammatories and blood thinners starting at least one week prior to an arm lift procedure, or as directed.

Am I a Good Candidate for Brachioplasty?

Candidates for brachioplasty are adults in good general health who have hanging, excess skin in the upper arms due to one or more of the following factors:

  • Aging
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Massive weight loss
Candidates for arm lift surgery may have functional issues in addition to cosmetic concerns with unwanted skin in the upper arm area. For instance, some patients experience rashes, other types of skin irritation, and/or hygiene challenges due to deep folds in the upper arm skin, and brachioplasty is often the best treatment solution in such cases.
Ideal candidates for brachioplasty are non-smokers, as smoking and vaping disrupt the healing process. However, patients who commit to abstaining from vaping and smoking for several weeks before and after arm lift surgery can also be candidates for this procedure.

What to Expect During Arm Lift Surgery

Pre-operatively, Dr. Jacobson will mark the skin to indicate where he will make your incisions. He can also review any aspects of the procedure that you may have questions about.

You’ll be given general anesthesia at the start of the surgery, so you will remain comfortable throughout the procedure. Next, Dr. Jacobson will make the incisions and remove the excess skin and adipose deposits. He’ll reshape and lift the remaining tissue to ensure a natural-looking outcome. Sutures will be placed to secure the new contours and close the incisions.

What to Expect After Brachioplasty

After your brachioplasty operation, you’ll have bandages covering your incisions to keep them clean and safe. Though you will need a family member or friend to drive you, you will be able to go home the same day as your procedure.

Be sure to follow the personalized timetable Dr. Jacobson provides regarding returning to work and resuming strenuous activity. Overexertion during the healing process can compromise your treatment outcome.
Initial brachioplasty results are noticeable right away. Ongoing improvements will continue over several weeks until healing is complete. Arm lift results can be long-lasting for patients who make weight management and general fitness a priority.

How Much Does Brachioplasty Cost?

The cost of brachioplasty varies based on the extent of the procedure, whether additional or related treatments are being performed, and other patient-specific necessities. The price of your arm lift will be determined during your initial consultation.
