Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction done by Dr. Jacobson located in Beverly Hills, CA

Breast reduction surgery can be a life-changing solution for patients with large breasts that cause physical pain and discomfort. It is also a cosmetic option for patients who are dissatisfied with their larger breast size. Dr. Joshua Jacobson is board-certified to perform breast reduction in Beverly Hills for both kinds of patients.

What Is Breast Reduction?

Also known as a reduction mammaplasty, breast reduction surgery involves the removal of fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts to reduce their size and weight. This procedure is often performed on patients whose large breasts are causing persistent problems like:

  • Back, neck, and shoulder pain
  • Nerve pain
  • Limited physical activity and range of motion
  • Bra indentations on the shoulders
  • Skin irritation
  • Trouble fitting into certain clothing

Ongoing pain and physical difficulties associated with overly large breasts can take an emotional toll; many patients seeking breast reduction surgery report lower self-esteem and other mental health problems. While all of these factors can make breast reduction necessary, patients can also pursue this procedure cosmetically to obtain breasts that are more proportional to their figures.

Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Reduction?

Women who are in good physical health but whose quality of life has suffered due to enlarged, heavy breasts can be great candidates for breast reduction surgery. While this treatment is often used as part of a “mommy makeover,” a breast reduction can also be performed as a stand-alone surgery. If you are still planning to have children or lose a significant amount of weight, speak with Dr. Jacobson about the best time for your breast reduction surgery.

Patients who do not smoke or vape are ideal candidates for breast reduction surgery. Patients who smoke may still be eligible for this procedure if they agree to quit for at least four weeks before and after their surgery.

What to Expect During Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery begins with administering general anesthesia for the patient’s comfort. Dr. Jacobson will then make an incision on each breast. The shape and location of the incisions vary based on breast size, the ratio of fat and tissue being removed, and other patient-specific factors.

Dr. Jacobson then carefully removes excess tissue and fat through the incisions. If enough fat is present, he may also employ liposuction. In most cases, the nipple actually stays attached to the breast and its blood and nerve supply, but sometimes it and the areola may have to be removed and reattached.
Next, Dr. Jacobson reshapes the breasts by lifting and suturing the remaining underlying glandular tissue. The incisions are brought together and closed. Sometimes, a small tube is temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluids after the procedure.

What to Expect After Breast Reduction Surgery

After breast reduction surgery is complete, bandages will be applied and you’ll be given an elastic bandage or surgical bra. You’ll need to wear this for at least one week to reduce swelling and help your breasts keep their new shape during healing. Dr. Jacobson will give you care instructions and may prescribe medication as necessary.

Breast reduction surgery patients will spend the first few hours of their recovery on-site. Once Dr. Jacobson approves your release, you will be able to go home. However, you will not be able to drive for several days, so be sure to prearrange transportation.
During the first week of breast reduction recovery, the breasts will likely feel tender from swelling. Continue to limit physical activity for four to six weeks and wear supportive garments as recommended. While post-op marks are to be expected, they should significantly fade and improve over time.

How Much Does a Breast Reduction Cost?

Just as the method of breast reduction depends on a person’s needs, so does the cost. The amount of tissue being removed will play a role in determining a final price. Some health insurance plans cover breast reduction surgery, but you will need to speak with your carrier and our staff for more details.
